We could all use some rest and relaxation right about … yesterday which is why it’s important to have a home bathroom where you can relax in after a long day. Aside from the kitchen, the bathroom is one of the most essential, important rooms in the house. Besides the obvious uses for a bathroom, the bathroom is also important because it can provide you and your family the necessary space to relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life. Unfortunately, if your bathroom space is outdated, nonfunctional, or just plain old, it can put a damper on that relaxation. Luckily, below are 6 ways to upgrade your bathroom to create a spa-like experience.

Reduce visual clutter

If you’ve ever been stressed or uneasy seeing mess around the house, you know just what a buzzkill clutter can be. Consider not only tidying up your bathroom space, but think about what storage options you have available to keep that clutter at bay. Is your current storage (i.e. cabinets, vanity, caddies) keeping things consistently out of sight? If not, it might be time for an upgrade.

Add a touch of gold

You don’t have to dig for gold or buy 5 golden rings, but consider adding items in your bathroom that have gold accents or hints of gold-colors in them. For example, consider adding a gold-colored faucet to the sink or bathtub, or maybe upgrading to a gold-trimmed mirror. You could also go smaller and add little decor like a mini plant with a gold pot, gold-accented soap dispenser, side table, or towels with gold-colored embroidery.

Upgrade your tub / shower

Consider small upgrades to your current bathtub or shower such as installing a rainfall shower, switching to a removable, hand-held shower head, upgrading to a multi-level showerhead, or switching your bathtub faucet to a more aesthetically appealing faucet head. You could also consider a complete tub and shower upgrade by either adding a shower-tub combo (if you don’t already have one), upgrading to a soak-in tub, or completely re-tiling the shower.

 Set the mood with lighting

Effective lighting can affect the mood of the environment for better or worse so choosing the right lighting is important. Spas typically use candles to make the room luminous and relaxing so consider installing a light dimmer to replicate this. If this seems like too big of a change, you could simply switch to dimmer light bulbs. Also consider adding lighting behind your mirror and under cabinets. To increase the ambiance, consider investing in a few candles as well that will not only set the spa-like environment through lighting but through relaxing scents as well.

 Use a relaxing color scheme

Like lighting, color can also affect the environment’s mood. Choosing the right color scheme can be a great way to set a spa-like environment while still putting your personality into the design. Consider whites & ivories, as well as neutral colors or wood-like features. For more specific ideas or for colorful inspiration, check out these soothing bathroom color schemes

 Add nature-like elements

Earthy and natural go together well to create a relaxing environment and what better way than to add some nature-like elements to your bathroom. Consider adding some live plants to your bathroom to set the mood and purify the air. Consider plants such as succulents, money trees, or ferns that look aesthetically pleasing and will add personality to the bathroom. For low light settings, a spider plant or Boston fern work well. If live plants aren’t your thing, fake plants work to set the mood while requiring no plant care. Natural stone is another way to set the earthy, natural feel and can be incorporated into fixtures, patterns, decor, or even as a tool for your at-home spa routine.
